Welcome to Newark CERT
The City of Newark and Alameda County Fire Department offer a community emergency response training program for community volunteers. The purpose of this training is to provide volunteers basic skills in firefighting, search and rescue, disaster medicine, and emergency preparedness. The main goal of the program is to help the citizens of Newark become self-sufficient for the first 72 hours following a major disaster by developing multi-functional community emergency response teams.
The Loma Prieta and Northridge earthquakes and 9/11 have demonstrated the importance of community volunteers during a disaster. Spontaneous volunteers are often the first on the scene to conduct initial search, rescue, and first aid. CERT volunteers are trained to participate and communicate effectively in emergency response efforts. It is imperative that the citizens of Newark be prepared and do not rely solely on professional emergency services.
Geological Survey predicts that there is a 70% chance that the Bay Area will be struck by a major earthquake within the next 30 years. When the “BIG ONE” hits, emergency services will be overwhelmed. It may take up to 72 hours or more for help to arrive.

Interested in getting your HAM radio license?
The HAM radios of 50 years ago were big tube filled behemoths but todays hand-held transceivers are compact, versatile and filled with amazing features. In a major disaster, cell and land-line phones will be useless and the only effective form of communication will be HAM radio. You must be licensed to use a HAM radio but it's a simple inexpensive process. The Bay Area Educational Amateur Radio Society offers a one day "HAM Cram" for only $30. The format is an all day study session followed by the exam with exceptionally high pass rates. The next session is Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 8:00AM to 5:00PM (Date is subject to change).
